A penny spar'd is twice got.

Benjamin Franklin image on coinBenjamin Franklin is credited with the modern wording:

A penny saved is a penny earned.

The proverb has been traced back to George Herbert's Outlandish Proverbs (1640), and may well pre-date that book:

A penny spar'd is twice got.
